What to expect: your background check

A background check is the final step before you join the Loula network. It's how we keep the families you'll serve safe, and how we stay compliant with our health plan contracts. If you're at this step, it means we've reviewed your application and we're ready to move forward with you. That's a good sign.

Here's exactly what happens, what we look at, and what it means for you. No surprises.

When this happens

We run your background check after we've reviewed your application and decided to move forward. You don't need to do anything until then. When you're ready, you'll get an email from our partner, Checkr, with a secure link to start.

Who runs it

We work with Checkr, a background check company trusted across healthcare and care work nationwide. Checkr collects your information securely and runs the check. Loula reviews the result.

Your part takes under 5 minutes

Checkr will email you a secure link. Completing your part is quick. You'll confirm:

  • Your full legal name

  • Date of birth

  • Social Security number

  • Zip code

You already shared your SSN with us during your application, so nothing here is new information. Checkr keeps it encrypted and handles it securely. Checkr will also ask for your authorization before running anything. That consent step happens inside Checkr's own secure flow.

You pay nothing

Loula covers the full cost of your check. There's no fee to you.

You have two weeks

Your link stays active for two weeks. You'll get a daily reminder email until you finish, so it won't slip your mind. If the link expires before you complete it, no problem. Just message us and we'll send you a fresh one.

What the check looks at

Checkr runs five standard searches:

  • A 7-year Social Security number trace

  • Sex Offender Registry search

  • Global Watchlist search

  • National Criminal Database search

  • 7-year county criminal records search

⭐️ Having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify you, and it shouldn't discourage you from completing this process.

How long Checkr takes

Most checks come back within 1 to 3 business days. A few take a little longer, usually when a county court is slow to respond. You can read more about timing in Checkr's guide to background check turnaround.

How we review your results

We receive one of two results: Clear or Review.

  • Clear means you're good to keep moving forward.

  • Review means we'll take a closer look, together.

A Review result is not a rejection.

When a result comes back as Review, our Provider Success team looks at the full picture. We consider what the record is, how long ago it happened, and whether it relates to the care you'd provide. We'll talk with you directly and confidentially before making any decision. We believe people are more than a single moment in their past, and we evaluate every Review result with that in mind.

If a background check ever affects our decision, Checkr's process protects you. You'll be able to see your report, dispute anything that's inaccurate, and respond before anything is final. This is called the adverse action process, and Checkr manages it directly with you.
